A contract lawyering practice is very conducive to working from home. When you work from home, you can arrange your office to suit your needs. You can also wear what you want.
The flexibility of a home office, combined with my continuing quest to get into better shape and the time limitations of a busy professional and personal life, have led me to put together this treadmill desk.
The treadmill (which I bought in 2003) has been gathering dust in the family room since 2004. I already had the laptop and extra monitor. The cart next to the treadmill is used during the summer to ferry food from the kitchen to the patio for barbecues. I bought the rest of the setup at www.EasychairWorkstation.com.
This will not be my full-time desk—I will also be using my regular office upstairs.
Interestingly, while I can’t work while listening to music, I have had no trouble at all accomplishing all of my usual work-related tasks (performing legal research, drafting briefs, talking on the telephone, etc.) while using the treadmill desk at a relatively brisk pace of up to 2 miles an hour. In fact, I’m typing this post at my treadmill desk!

Lisa-
I saw this on Grant’s blog. This a great set-up. I am so impressed. It would be fantastic for checking blogs and email and maybe burning off some steam after a tense day in court.
How does the treadmill noise impact your microphone?
Great Idea!

I have participated in numerous telephone calls while on the treadmill, and I’ve asked the callers if they can hear the treadmill noise. Only one person, who described himself as having particularly acute hearing, could hear it, and even he said that it didn’t bother him.

[...] your bunny slippers. Last week I talked about greening the home office. This week, after seeing contract lawyer / legal writer extraordinaire Lisa Solomon’s treadmill desk (you gotta see it), I am inspired to talk about “comfort-modding” your home [...]

well, this is very cool. I’ve seen some very striking health/fitness results being reported in trade magazines about folks who are using this type of setup… yes, I run marathons but I don’t get out every day and in the winter its mighty cold at 5 am. So this is cool.. I’ll have to figure out where I’d put one!

Yes, the fact that my family room is “climate controlled” certainly makes it much more appealing to exercise every day, regardless of the weather outside.
And (believe me) I would never get up at 5 a.m. just to exercise. The seamless integration of the treadmill desk into my existing daily routine has also contributed to my success (so far) in using it on a consistent basis (I’ve only missed a couple of weekdays since I started, and that’s because I was sick).

Now all you need is the Rocky theme music playing in the background! Nice set-up.
